Description

The Chatham Head Tigers team of 1956 was one of the teams in a dynasty of Chatham Head baseball excellence which, in the 1950s and 60s, won two New Brunswick championships and seven Miramichi Valley Baseball League Championships. The 1956 team, one of the provincial championship teams, was inducted into the Baseball New Brunswick Hall of Fame in 1999. The team featured a colourful mix of veterans like Eric Henry, Billy Sullivan, Henry Gallant, and Harold Fletcher, with a bevy of younger stars represented by Wally Doucette, Pat Henry, Albert Doucet, and Gordie Cassidy. This aggregation of wily veterans and young up-and-comers struck fear into Miramichi and provincial opponents alike. Under the leadership of the Henderson brothers, Waldo and Chick, and with contributions from stalwarts like Gerald Chambers, Harold Cassidy, John Sullivan, Raymond Brideau, Billy Craig, Emile Goguen, Benny Gogen, Keith Stewart, Benny McCafferty, and Willard Vickery, the 1956 Tigers are representative of the best of a proud tradition of Chatham Head baseball which the City of Miramichi Sports Wall of Fame is pleased to recognize and honour.
