Gary Wood had an extensive and very successful history as a baseball and hockey coach.  He achieved a Level 3 coaching status in both.

He coached the Newcastle Cardinals Baseball Team from 1987-93 after a 3-year stint with the Red Bank Warriors.  He helped lead the Cardinals to 5 NB titles and 3 Atlantic titles.  This team also picked up a bronze Medal at the Canadian Championships in 1991 and a silver in 1992.  He coached the NB Canada Games team in 1989 and was chosen NB Coach of the Year in 1991.

Gary coached 10 years in the Newcastle Minor Hockey system before moving on to the high school level with MVHS.  His Pulamoo team won the Provincial title in1988.

Perhaps his greatest coaching accomplishments came with his involvement in women’s hockey.  He was instrumental in bringing women’s hockey into the limelight both locally and provincially.  Gary coached the MVHS Varsity Girls from 2000-2005.  He was heavily involved with Hockey Canada’s Atlantic Centre of Excellence with the women under 18 program.  He coached Team Atlantic Women at the National Aboriginal Championship in 2005, and his “AAA” Midget team won an Atlantic Championship in 2009.

Gary was also a prominent local entrepreneur who served the community on several boards and councils.  His impressive resume makes Gary Wood a welcome addition to our wall.
